Financial Capabilities Week

12th May 2017

This week was Financial Capabilities Week in St. Mary's P.S.  The P.4-P.7 children ran a Healthy Tuck Shop for breaktime snack. The children priced the groceries and then came up with a price list to ensure they met their budget and were able to at least break even.  Then all children in the school were able to purchase healthy treats from the tuck shop on a daily basis.  P.1-P.4 had to work within their budget and look after their money on a daily basis.  The children really enjoyed taking part and were able to get a better understanding of the value of money.  The tuck shop even had a surprise visitor on Monday and there was no discount given for the special guest!!!!

P.1-P.4 were role playing shop and solving money problems during their weekly maths lessons. This was made more exciting by having the shop outdoors in the glorious sunshine.

We also had Justine (the branch manager) from Fivemiletown Dansk Bank in to run workshops for all the children.  The children learned about savings, interest, budgeting and even discuss 'needs' and 'wants'.  The children were also introduced to Moneyville, a game which can be played on the computer, where they are encouraged to save up money from tasks in order to go shopping.  This can be found at www.moneyville.co.uk.

We would like to thank Justine for her time and effort.

Well done to all the children for their enthusiasm in all tasks this week.
