P7 engineers of the future!

29th Sep 2016

Our Primary 7 pupils headed to St. Ciaran's on Tuesday to participate in a Sentinus programme for the afternoon. There they met up with lots of other local schools and teamed up with boys from St. Malachy's, Glencull. In their group, they were set the challenge of creating a wind turbine, powered by a solar panel,  on top of a sturdy structure that could support it. Shane immediately got to work, determined to do his father proud, and he was ably supported by TJ and Cai who used dowel rods to give their pyramid the support it needed. A past pupil of St Mary's, Gabrielle Aleknaviciute, was at hand to support the boys and they were delighted when the light hit their solar panel and the turbine whirled into action. Next up were the rockets and the boys set to work making their rocket, determined to get theirs as high and far as possible. We headed outside to test them and their rocket was indeed one of the most successful, blasting off into the car park. It was a fantastic afternoon and the boys showed, yet again, how capable they are in STEM related activities.
